Hey! Mr. Prime Minister!… Andy!
I took note this morning that Australia has elected a new government and thus a new Prime Minister. I don’t follow Australian politics closely but I watched this with a bit of interest as the issues involved, seemed to me, to be very much the same issues we will be facing next year in the US elections. To say the now former Prime Minister Howard was on Bush’s side may be a little too simple – but… he was. And for that, he was soundly defeated by someone who took issue with those opinions (War in Iraq, Kyoto protocols, etc.). Its stupid for me to assume any of that public opinion will bleed into our election – but I can hope.
I must admit to my Australian friends one thing before closing this post – I have a really, really hard time thinking about Australian politics… or Australia in general, without thinking about the classic Simpson’s “trip to Australia” episode. I find myself repeating the lines:
That’s a bloody outrage, it is! I want to take this all the way to the Prime Minister.
(walks out to backyard where Prime Minister is lounging in an inner-tube in pond)

My Australian accent is pretty poor – but I make an approximation of the one used in that episode and then I laugh to myself.
I do take a great deal of pride in being able to entertain myself at all times.
