You have to be kidding me

We are only 7 days into June and stuck with this weather? Add to that a dewpoint of 71° F and an Orange code air quality warning. Not a good day for me to even think of going outside.

We were finally coming out of our massive drought – I sure hope we aren’t seeing a trend that plunges us back in.

We’ll stick with solar

There is an article saying that scientists figured out how to make energy from falling rain. Sounds like great news, except that WE NO LONGER GET ANY RAIN.

Our deficit since 1/1/07 is now about -10 inches. We usually get 10 inches in the winter and I think we’ve gotten something like 6 or 7. If we don’t have some massive late winter/spring rains we are going to be seriously in trouble when the summer gets here.

The Old Man ain’t snoring… still…

This may only matter to a very few of the very few folks who read my blog – but, we have gotten some substantial rain today and are expecting even more this week! Pretty big news considering the unbelievably bad drought we’ve been having. It still won’t get us back up to “normal” but it still might put a small glimmer of hope in a few city manager’s eyes.

Think global, act local

Taking a cue from the Onion, I’d like to call on the Carrboro Town Council to ban waterboarding in Carrboro. We simply can’t have that kind of water wasting going on with this drought. No water for lawns, no water for suspected terrorists.

News is smart

Brad, the Hog Magnate, told me yesterday that a local news station actually said the other day “When are we going to finally dry out? find out at….”

Dry out?? Dry out? They must have only one script written for rain.

For what its worth, we have had a right-good soaking. We probably need about 10 more days of this though. Can’t take long showers yet.

Very local coverage here

Help us – we need some water

If you take a look at the 6 Week U.S. Drought Monitor (thanks to John Fleck for that link) you will notice that here in central North Carolina we move from Moderate to Extreme drought conditions in very quick order. I could walk outside and take photos of dried up, brown leaves – wilted plants – dead trees – and brown grass but that would just be depressing.

I suppose at the very least all we are suffering from is ugly yards so far but still, this is getting crazy.

Rain is forecasted for tomorrow but considering the last time we saw any is measured in months, I’m not placing bets for it actually happening. I hate to say it, but we sure could use a good ol’ fashioned category one hurricane right now.

Note: I suppose I should make the obvious point that if you view the 6 week drought monitor 6 weeks from the original date of this post… it will have changed. Lets hope for the better.

Update: We got it! Woo! Rain started around 3-ish and is still going at 7-ish. Heavy at times. Now we just need it to continue for about a month.
